Description

Lili St. Cyr was, in the words of legendary reporter Mike Wallace, the “highest paid stripteaser in America.” Wallace was so fascinated by Lili that out of all the presidents and celebrities he interviewed over a long career, towards the end of his life, she was the one he remained fixated on. Her beauty had that kind of effect.

Lili St. Cyr, the one time queen of burlesque, led an incredible life –six marriages, romances with Orson Wells, Yul Brenner, Vic Damone, a number of suicide attempts, all alongside great fame and money. Yet despite her fierce will she lost it all; becoming a recluse in her final decades, she eked out a living selling old photos of herself living with magazines taped over her windows.

Goddess of Love Incarnate will be the definitive biography of this legendary figure, done with the cooperation of Lili’s only surviving relative. But the book does more than fascinate readers with stories of a byone era. St. Cyr was ahead of her time in facing the perils and prejudices of working women, and the book offers a portrait of a strong artistic figure who went against the traditional roles and mores expected of women at that time St. Cyr was the first stripper to work in the swanky nightclubs on Sunset Boulevard. She was the first stripper to work Las Vegas. She was at the top of her game for over thirty years. And though she would feel conflicted by it, as do many women who feel the push/pull of careers – especially controversial, button-pushing careers – Lili would dismiss what she did as having no importance. But she wouldn’t give it up – not for millionaires and most certainly not for love.

Based on years of research, Goddess of Love Incarnate contains information and memorabilia that was almost lost forever. As an award winning documentary filmmaker and expert writer, Zemeckis brings St. Cyr back to life the way no other writer can, restoring Lili to her rightful place in American history.

  1. David Verzello

An excellent look back at the life of an icon and the time in which she lived.

Leslie Zemeckis has truly conquered a highly ambitious project in writing the life story of Lili St. Cyr. My mother and I have both read this book, and as family members (my mother was Lili’s cousin) we both learned a considerable amount about our family history. As did those of you who grew up in the height of Lili’s popularity, I have also grown up knowing facts about Lili, but Leslie truly fleshed out (tongue in cheek) the details of Lili’s life in such a way that we could experience the drama, hard work and ultimate tragedy of Lili’s life. How sad for someone who had such a broad base of acquaintances to die alone.

  3. David Jackel

The best biography I have ever read. Leslie Zemeckis is a magnificent author. Lily St. Cyr is an amazing and complex character and Ms. Zemeckis brings her to life in beautiful and vivid detail.

This author captured me with her last book (Behind the Burly Q) as apart of a New Year’s Resolution I had to dive into worlds outside of my norm and learn from new perspectives. I was raised in a conservative home so books about burlesque were not apart of the bookshelf collection, but that is what I think people miss out on in life so often- new perspectives and life lessons from places you normally wouldn’t venture. I love the cadence of the author’s writing and as a 80s/90s kid, feel like I’m getting some “Now and Then” or “League of Their Own” type of behind the scenes to the lives of these women. While you may think you have nothing to gain or in common with burlesque stars, you will be surprised that you do share universal commonalities and will most likely learn valuable lessons – as all lives offer. This take on Lili personally taught me that I can tap into some more gaul and brazen confidences in my passions pursuits in life. To sum it up, this book illustrated that you can be a wallflower in life, or a centerpiece. Both are lovely, but one is definitely more fun.
