Leslie’s On Zee Go Newsletter

Welcome to my revamped Newsletter where it’s all things literary . . . in stilettos.

“She is too fond of books, and it has turned her brain . . .” Louisa May Alcott

ON THE ROAD
Well it was eight states and many cities where I felt like Willie Loman hustling and selling Feuding Fan Dancers. From Boston to N. Carolina, Las Vegas and Austin.

ITEMS I CANNOT TRAVEL WITHOUT!
This is probably the first time on and off planes where my skin didn’t crinkle up and feel – not to mention look – like the Sahara Desert. The SK-II Face masks are amazing! My Skin Up moisturizer is my current can’t-live-without. Of course a flamingo feather and COMPRESSION SOCKS. Ugly and unpleasant to put on they keep anything from swelling and I felt like I could run a marathon (if I ran a marathon, which I would not).

Flew over a lot of snow in the middle of the country to get to Asheville. Stayed at a super cute boutique hotel, The Windsor Boutique in DT Asheville, which is artsy – or really crafty. Of course on the day of my book signing the weather called for severe weather, as in you will turn into an icicle if you even step one foot outside. Needless to say, there were not as many hardy souls who showed up (and the weather was WRONG!!!). But Author Tessa Fontaine led a spirited discussion about my book (I’m a FAN of hers) and we had a fan dancer and all was well. Also, got to spend an afternoon with my 97 year-old great aunt, who lives alone, still does some quilting, READS and is so positive and lively she was an inspiration on how to live your life! Highlight for sure.

Okay, so Hillsborough event was a trip! Cute, historic, tiny city (but I went on the radio there!) with a mess of best-selling authors who live there, including Frances Mayes (Under the Tuscan Sun.) Who knew? The event was at the King Street Bar, with the Bottoms Up Burlesque & Comedy Troop, a group of older, diverse volunteers who strip, sing and dance and raise money for non-profits. That night we raised money for Second Harvest Food Bank of Tennessee, an organization we support that feeds kids on weekends. They get a pack of food on Fridays to take home. So, the nude pictures on the wall of the bar (see picture below) was painted by Mayor Tom, who showed up, threw back a couple drinks and bought a book! A lot of people showed up, including a one-legged man, who intervenes in elder abuse cases, to a very elderly couple who came in on walkers (and bought books!). Best of all were some folks who could not afford to buy a book (they told me times were rough) BUT they wanted to give money to the charity. And they did. Real sweet people.

Viva Las Vegas for a Naked Girls Reading at the Burlesque Hall of Fame. Yes, it is exactly what it sounds like naked girls reading from Feuding Fan Dancers. They have worldwide events, all started by my friend Michelle L’amour, who has been dancing at some of my events. Her FAN dance is so beautiful and she uses the same music, “Clair de Lune” by Debussy that Sally Rand danced to. Check her out on social media. She’s awesome. I sponsor an exhibit at the museum and its worth checking out in Vegas when you are next there.

Then Boston. Cold. The most challenging event of all. Publishers messed up and we had a book signing with NO books. Yes. What’s an author to do – when told at the LAST minute? Luckily, my quick thinking friend and fellow burlesquer/author Marci Johnson encouraged everyone to go online right then and there show me they bought a book and I promised (and already have) signed them and sent them postage free and through in a some swag). So we sold better than we thought. The TropiGals performed their FAN dance. So happy to get on the plane the next morning and GO HOME!

TropiGals in Cambridge

In summary super successful, super stressful. I saw friends in EVERY city I visited. Was embraced by some very important bookstores, sold a lot of books, and even some of my movies and older two books! So I am encouraged to write the next one. (P.S. I’ve already started)

ADVICE FOR AUTHORS ON THE ROAD
Travel with your own box of books, because you never freakin’ know.
And lastly what I’m reading or recently read
for complete list, I have everything on Good Reads
as I can’t remember them all!

I traveled with a book. Always. Queen of Fashion: What Marie Antoinette Wore to the Revolution.
Many of you know I’m a huge Marie Antoinette FAN. This book is so good! Unbiased, historical not the least sentimental about the tragedy that befell this Queen whose odds were stacked against her.

Next newsletter will highlight our European Marwen press tour!!! “Welcome to Marwen ” opens December 21st. SO it’s going to be all about the new movie, with my fellow cast members, Steve Carell and Leslie Mann…stay tuned…please visit my website to check out previous newsletters

Thank you for loving my books and the support.

Leslie
